Competency Based Instrument Rating - CBIR
The Competency Based Instrument Rating (CBIR) is an essential training programme for every pilot holding a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) who wishes to fly under instrument flight rules in all classes of airspace and in challenging weather conditions.
This rating allows pilots to fly down to a minimum decision height of 200 feet.
Minimum requirements or preferences
Competency Based Instrument Rating - CBIR
At the start of the theoretical training:
In possession of at least an ICAO-recognised PPL(A)
Preferably in possession of an EASA medical certificate
Preferably at least 17 years old
Sufficient knowledge of English, mathematics, and physics
Training Structure and Course Layout
The training courses consist of a distance learning phase (home study at your own pace) combined with a half-day brush-up session per subject (morning or afternoon), based on questions and answers to assess your fundamental knowledge. These half-day sessions are scheduled over five consecutive working days, as stated here or at the bottom of this page. These sessions, often referred to as Brush-up courses, are mandatory as required by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). Upon completion of each module, examinations will follow. These are conducted monthly at our own in-house examination centre.
None of the Brush-up courses take place in Arnhem; participants follow the sessions from home via live webinars, which require a computer with a webcam and headset.
Prior to the course, a refresher module covering basic mathematics and physics is included, along with a mandatory test.
To keep the theory course clear and well-structured, and to ensure that specific subjects align properly, the course material — consisting of seven theoretical subjects — is divided into two modules.
Module 1
062 - Radio Navigation (PBN)
022 – Instrumentation
040 – Human Performance and Limitations
Module 2
033 - Flight Planning and Monitoring
050 - Meteorology
010 - Air Law
090 - Communications

Self-study
A major advantage of our distance learning CBIR training is that you can organise your own study pace and schedule. The home-study programme is systematically structured into weekly and daily tasks. With approximately fifteen study hours per week, a completion time of around six months is achievable for both modules, excluding examinations.
An average student completes the CBIR theoretical training depending on their personal time investment and study pace.
During self-study, you will be guided through all subjects and topics via a simple module-based study programme. Your study progress is monitored through mandatory progress tests. These progress tests are administered after a varying number of chapters and can be completed at home on your computer. With a single click, you can then submit the test online to Orbit Groundschool for review.
