Commercial Pilot – CPL(A/H)

Commercial Pilot – CPL(A/H)

Commercial Pilot CPL(A or H)

The Commercial Pilot License (CPL) is the minimal level of pilot license that is required to act as pilot in command of aircraft with a weight up to 5700 kg, or with less than 9 passenger seats. This course is designed for those who aspire to a career as a professional pilot, for example as a flight instructor (VFR-only), or as a pilot who operates aerial advertising or sightseeing flights. It is possible to obtain only the CPL certificate, without adding an Instrument Rating (IR). This course is also highly suitable for helicopter pilots with career aspirations for VFR flights only.

Minimum requirements and/or preferences

  • you have at least an ICAO approved PPL(A) or PPL(H)
  • ideally, you have an EASA Class 1 medical certificate
  • you are preferably at least 17 years old
  • you have completed secondary school
  • adequate knowledge of English as well as mathematics and physics

Course structure and organization

Course structure and organization

All theory courses consist of a distance learning phase (self-study at your own pace) and a short half-day session per subject (morning or afternoon) based on question-and-answer to check your basic knowledge. These half-day sessions are scheduled over 5 consecutive working days, as shown here or at the bottom of this page. This training, also known as Revision & Brush Up, is mandatory as required by the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). The exams are taken after the completion of each module. Exam sittings are monthly in our on-site examination centre.

Nowadays, the Revision & Brush Up Course can be taken via our virtual classroom environment through live webinars. This means that you can participate from your home and no longer have to come to Arnhem.

Before the course, you will need to complete a refresher module on basic math and physics. There will be a mandatory test at the end of the module.

To keep the theory course well-organized and to ensure that specific components are well-aligned, the course material, consisting of 13 subjects, is divided into two modules:

Module 1
061 – General Navigation
022 – Instrumentation
033 – Flight Planning and Monitoring
050 – Meteorology
040 – Human Performance and Limitations
090 – Communications
031 – Mass and Balance
Module 2
021 – Aircraft General Knowledge
062 – Radio Navigation (PBN)
071 – Operational Procedures
081 – Principles of Flight
032 – Performance
010 – Air Law

After passing your first exams of module 1, you will continue with module 2 through self-study. You will then attend the final classroom-based exam training in Arnhem and take the remaining exams.

Self-study

The biggest advantage of our distance learning CPL course is that you can study at your own pace and fit your studies in around your other commitments. The home-study programme is structured in weeks and daily tasks, in a way that makes it feasible to complete both modules in about six months, with fifteen study hours a week. This does not include the time needed to take the exams.

The average student completes the CPL theory course in about four to six months. Module 1 takes about 14 weeks, module 2 about 10 weeks. Of course you are in charge of your own workload. The completion time depends on how much time you can invest per week.

A simple work programme will guide you through all subjects and topics in each module during your self-study. Your study progress is monitored by means of mandatory progress tests. You will take the progress tests at various points throughout the course, at home on your own computer. Once you have finished a test, you can submit it to Orbit Groundschool for review with just a click of a button.
