Basic Instrument Rating – BIR
The Basic Instrument Rating (BIR) is an essential course for any pilot with a Private Pilot License (PPL) or a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) who dreams of flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in all airspace classifications and in challenging weather conditions, with the ability to descend to a minimum decision altitude (MDA) of 400 feet, a cloud base of 600 feet or higher, and a visibility of more than 1500 metres. This course is specifically developed for pilot license holders who do not have professional aspirations, but want to expand their skills within the ‘small aviation’ domain.
Minimum requirements or preferences
Basic Intrument Rating - BIR
At the start of the theory course
You have at least a PPL(A)
Ideally, you have an (extended) EASA Class 2 medical certificate
Preferably at least 17 years of age
Adequate knowledge of English as well as mathematics and physics
Course structure and organization
All theory courses consist of a distance learning phase (self-study at your own pace) and a short half-day session per subject (morning or afternoon) based on question-and-answer to check your basic knowledge. These half-day sessions are scheduled over 5 consecutive working days, as shown here of onderaan deze pagina staat vermeldt.
Nowadays, the Revision & Brush up Course can be taken via our virtual classroom environment through live webinars. This means that you can participate from your home and no longer have to come to Arnhem.
Before the course, you will need to complete a refresher module on basic math and physics. There will be a mandatory test at the end of the module.
To keep the theory course well-organized and to ensure that specific components are well-aligned, the course material, consisting of 7 subjects, is divided into two modules:
Module 1
Aircr. General Knowledge - Instrumentation
Friday
Human Performance
Module 2
Radio navigation
Flight Planning and Flight Monitoring
Air Law
Communications
Module 3
Air Law
Instrumentation
Flight Planning
Meteorology and Communications

About our digital course material
Self-study
The main advantage of our distance learning IR course is that you can determine your own pace and study schedule. The home-study program is structured into weeks and daily tasks, making it feasible to complete both modules in approximately six months with around fifteen study hours per week, excluding examinations.
The average student completes the IR theory course in about four to six months. Of course you are in charge of your own study load. The completion time depends on how much time you can invest per week.
A simple work programme will guide you through all subjects and topics in each module during your self-study. Your study progress is monitored by means of mandatory progress tests. You will take the progress tests at various points throughout the course, at home on your own computer. Once you have finished a test, you can submit it to Orbit Groundschool for review with just a click of a button.
